Gaeilge School Improvement Plan

Summary of Main Strengths as identified in last S.S.E.

  • Two thirds of pupils describe themselves as liking Irish.
  • The last W.S.E. noted effective practices in the teaching of Irish.
  • Parents report that most children (over 75%) like Irish.
  • Teachers report pupils as willing to engage with the Irish language when asked a direct question in Irish that they are familiar with.
  • The majority of pupils have the ability leaving our school to study honours Irish in the Secondary School.

 

Summary of Main Areas requiring Improvement as Identified in last S.S.E.

  • Children to have a more positive opinion of their own competency in Irish.
  • Increase exposure to Irish by the pupils.
  • A whole school approach to developing competency in Irish to be clarified.

 

Improvement Targets (related to Pupil’s achievement).

  • Targets related to pupils proficiency in Irish to be set out.
  • Children to improve their own view of their competency in Irish.
  • Children to have more questions they can answer readily in Irish.
  • Children to have more Irish phrases they can readily understand.

 

Required Actions that will help achieve the targets

  • The school to write down a summary of the core competencies for Infants, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th. This summary is to be based on the curriculum and will be under the strands of listening and speaking for infants and listening, speaking, reading and writing for all other classes.
  • The principal to deliver as many of the fograí as possible as Gaeilge.
  • The principal to operate the school shop as Gaeilge.
  • Teachers to write down for each set of classes phrases that can be regularly used in communication with pupils.
  • Posters to be drawn up to be placed in the corridors and in the office with the shop showcasing communication through Irish.

 

Timeframe for Action

Plan to be implemented in January 2016.

 

Success Criteria

Teacher appraisal and a further questionnaire of pupils in June 2016.
